Council unable to make ends meet but PA, UNP councillors plan over Rs. 8 m. tour By Methsiri B. Herath our Kurunegala Corr. October 18 Island: A group of 49 PA and UNP members of the PA—controlled North Western Provincial Council has planned a tour of Singapore and Thailand at a cost of Rs. 8.3 million. It has been pointed out that at a time the government is facing a severe financial crisis it is an utter waste to undertake a tour of this nature which costs almost Rs. 170,000 per member. Three JVP members of the council Nimal Herath, S. Ranasinghe and Priyankara Weerakumara have written to the Chairman of the Council stating that the tour at such an exorbitant cost was an injustice caused to the citizens of the Province at a time the council was finding it difficult to make ends meet. JVP member Priyankara Weerakumara has made a request to allocate this sum to upgrade the cardiac unit of the Kurunegala teaching hospital. (18/10/02 go2lanka.com) |
