JVP protests the arrival of Norwegian Team to Hambanthota October 21 Lankatruth: Norwegian Deputy foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen and a team of representatives from Norway arrived in Sri Lanka this morning by flight UL 506 of Sri Lankan Airways to draw up the agenda for next round of peace talks between the government and the LTTE. Jon Westborg, the Norwegian Ambassador to Sri Lanka and a few people had assembled at the Air Port to welcome the Deputy Minister. After the welcoming the delegation left to Weerawila in Hambanthota District by an air craft belonging to Sri Lanka Air Force to study about the development work in the Hambanthota district. The delegation participated at a special discussion organized at the District Secretariat of Hambantota. Meanwhile the JVP had organized a protest campaign to oppose the arrival of this delegation to Hamhanthota. A large crowd including Mr. Nihal Galappaththi, JVP Member of Parliament for Hambanthota District participated at this agitation. The agitators demonstrated slogans opposing the Norwegian agents who help to establish an Elam state and destroy the unity of Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim people. The agitators demonstrated along the route the Norway agents were to take to come to the Secretariat. The delegation had to take an alternate route. While the talks were going on the demonstrators arrived at the Secretariat and picketed for about an hour. Mr. Nihal Galappaththi, Member of Parliament for Hambanthota from the JVP too had been invited for the meeting with the Deputy Foreign Minister from Norway but ‘Lankatruth’ has been informed that the General Secretary of the JVP had sent a letter to the Ambassador of Norway declining the invitation.
