JVP scoffs at UNF 'brains' October 21 Daily mirror: The JVP in a scathing attack on the intellectuals of the UNF government has said that these "brainy persons" were unable to draft the 19th Amendment to be in conformity with the Constitution. The boast of the UNF government had been that it possessed three Constitutional experts among its members. Tilak Marapana had been the former Attorney General. Prof. G.L. Peiris, a Constitutional expert who had even written the Constitution of Nepal, was a Professor of Law. K.N. Choksy has been described as a top Constitutional lawyer. All these so-called experts had been unable to write a simple amendment to conform with the Constitution, the JVP said. The statement said that the attempt to achieve a single party dictatorship in the country had failed with the 19th Amendment to the Constitution being "stillborn" subsequent to the still unpublished determination by the Supreme Court. The JVP asserts that from the moment the concept of the 19th Amendment was introduced, they were against it as they saw it to be an undemocratic agenda. (21/10/02 go2lanka.com) |
