Muslims hold hartal in Oluvil January31, DailyMirror:About 12,000 Muslims yesterday staged a hartal in the Oluvil South East University premises against harassment by the LTTE Muslim women too took part in the hartal organized by the students union of the University. Shops, schools and government officers were closed and a majority of participants were school children. They demanded that the LTTE stop abductions and ransom demands, permit an independent Muslim delegate to attend the peace talks, and that a separate administrative unit be given to Muslims in case a Federal administration is given to the LTTE. A meeting was held at the end of the hartal in the university premises and the students who addressed the meeting requested that the media not publish their names. Two groups arriving from Attapalana and Palanin carried banners and shouted slogans. The whole area was decorated in green which was the colour of the Muslims the organisers said. Organizers said that although a video cameraman from the LTTE was present to video the proceedings they requested them to refrain from doing so. (31/01/03 go2lanka.com) |
