The Ranil Wickremesinghe administration, by allowing the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam a permanent sea passage to transport its troops from Northern Province to Eastern Province and back had created not only more ability for the terrorist group to establish a separate state but also posed a serious threat to the security of India, Sri Lanka's second largest opposition group the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) charged. The JVP called the LTTE a more dangerous terrorist group than al Queda, which created the September 11 terror and said the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration by giving more and more concessions to the LTTE terrorist group was creating an increasingly serious threat to India, where the terrorist group was a proscribed organization. The LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and the group's Intelligence Chief Pottuamman are wanted in India for the assassination of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The LTTE is also allegedly training anti-Indian separatist fighters in India. The opposition group JVP, at this press conference in Colombo, which was also broadcast, called the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and terrorist leader Velupillai Prabhakaran a surrender agreement and warned everybody who supported it would suffer its consequences. Wimal Weerawansa, the information secretary of the JVP said during the People's Alliance administration there had been clashes between some ministers and the President and then the UNP did not ever call it a clash between the legislature and the executive. Although, the same in essence was happening today, to make the people forget about the other serious problems in the country and draw their attention to something else, Weerawansa said, the government had started talking about a clash between the executive President and the legislature, which was actually a red herring. For a national movement for an honorable peace in the country, Weerawansa said, the JVP was getting together with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and any other party which was prepared to bring about a definitive defeat to the United National Party through a broad based national unity similar to one that was available in the nineteen fifties. The JVP leaders also congratulated all Sri Lankan athletes who won awards at the 14th Asian Athletic meet that was concluded on Monday in Colombo. Before holding the press conference, a delegation of the JVP visited Maha Nayaka Thero of Malwatte, in Kandy and received his blessings. (EOM) (02/08/14 go2lanka.com) |
