SLMM WILL REQUEST MORE CONCESSIONS IN THE SEA CORRIDOR AGREEMENT IN FAVOR OF LIBERATION TIGERS OF TAMIL EELAM
By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles

The Norway backed Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission has once again undertaken to negotiate with the Sri lanka government to change the agreement on the transportation of the troops of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam from Wanni to Eastern Province and back in favor of the Tamil Terrorists.

During the first transportation of Tiger troops the Sri Lanka Navy complained to the Sri lanka Monitoring Mission that the terrorist group broke conditions of the agreement by sailing too close to the island nation’s Eastern shore.

The Sea Tiger boats carrying LTTE troops from Wanni’s Mullaithivu to Eastern Province’s Vakarai have broken the agreement by sailing too close to the shores, SLMM Chief Trond Furhovde admitted.

According to the agreement the Tamil terrorists carrying boats can only be close to the shores between five to eight nautical miles. But the navy charged that they came closer than that.

At a meeting held between Trond Furhovde and LTTE political wing chief S.P. Thamilchelvan, Sea Tiger chief Soosai and other LTTE military leaders it was agreed to request from the Sri Lanka government to decrease the distance between boats and the shore to be less than five nautical miles.

Initially it was the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission which successfully negotiated the original agreement between the Tigers and the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration amidst protests of the Sri Lanka Navy to obtain a sea corridor to transport troops between the North and the East. .

The London based LTTE organ The Tamil Guardian said, “The agreement (was) concluded (after) several months of tough negotiations by both sides conducted through and under the aegis of the SLMM.,” to obtain the sea passage from the Sri Lanka government.

The editorial of the LTTE organ said the agreement “on sea passage for the LTTE personnel is a triumph of diplomacy by the SLMM.”

The LTTE editorial attacking President Chandrika Kumaratunga said, “the sullen intransigence on the Sri Lanka Navy on ceasefire related matters –encouraged by President Chandrika Kumaratunga through her hand picked SLN chief” has made the making of the agreement of the LTTE sea passage a “very complex” task.

The SLMM is expected to discuss with the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration to obtain more concessions for the LTTE and make amendments in the agreement. (EOM)
