The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), which convened a special Central Committee meeting of the party unanimously decided to vehemently oppose the decision of the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration to lift the ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam as a pre-condition to talks in Thailand. In a statement to the press, the strongly nationalist party questioned the government as to how such a necessity was not there when the LTTE and the government held even ministerial level meetings recently. The MEP Central Committee said , “The government has had a number of discussions with the LTTE at ministerial and official levels, and the need to lift the ban of the LTTE did not arise.” The MEP, a partner of the opposition People’s Alliance, in this statement said while the party was committed to finding solutions to the country’s problems democratically it totally rejected separatism and terrorism. Warning the government the LTTE had not given up their fight for separatism and terrorism and its illegal insurrection of an armed struggle to achieve the contemptible end of a separate state called Eelam the statement further said , “ The MEP very strongly states that the Sri Lanka government should not remove the LTTE proscription”. Calling the current policy of the government to de-proscribe the Tamil terrorist group quite a dangerous move the MEP said once it was done it would make the terrorist group no longer an illegitimate group and thereby seeking all the national and international recognition. In no uncertain words the MEP said . “The MEP would like to warn the government not to pursue this dangerous move of lifting the ban on the LTTE.” The statement reminded that the MEP always stood for the unitary state, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sri Lanka. It said when the present UNF government came to power and signed a memorandum of understanding with the terrorist group the MEP severely warned about certain clauses of the agreement. During the past few months, the statement said the LTTE had violated many clauses of the very agreement they signed virtually having a rule of their own. The MEP Central Committee further said the way the LTTE had behaved during the last couple of months clearly proved what the MEP said of the MOU was true. It said, the terrorist organization was bringing in and stockpiling arms unlawfully, and recruiting and training its cadres in preparation for war against the MOU. The statement further accused the terrorist group of violating law and order in the North and East openly and suppressing democratic human rights of the people and especially of those who politically opposed them. The MEP Central Committee said the terrorist group never gave up terrorism or separatism for which they were banned originally and there was no reason created to lift the ban now.
