JAFFNA’S SOLE UNP MEMBER STARTS A BOYCOTT OF THE PARLIAMENT AND SAYS RANIL WICKREMESINGHE PREFERS TULF OVER HIM IN JAFFNA
By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles

Accusing the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was favoring the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) over him in matters concerning affairs in Jaffna the Hindu Religious Affairs Minister and the sole United National Party Member of Parliament of the District of Jaffna, Mr. T.Maheswaran has started a boycott of Parliament in protest.

He accused the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe of helping TULF, the largest coalition partner of the Tamil national Alliance in getting his supporters who helped him during the parliamentary elections like the G.A. G.H. s and Principals of Schools transferred out of their current stations.

A businessman, Maheswaran came to prominence for his pro-LTTE statements from UNP election platforms in Jaffna during the last general elections in Sri Lanka showing the first public indications that the United National Party was having a pre-election agreement with LTTE’s Velupillai Prabhakaran.  Prabhakaran’s later appeal to vote Ranil Wickremesinghe’s party helped the then opposition UNP to topple the People’s Alliance regime with a landslide victory as the Tamils en block voted the UNP.

Interviewed by the BBC’s Sinhala language program Maheswaran said the TULF had misled the people of Jaffna against him and he was unable to serve the very voters who elected him for the last eight months substantially.

He said there were many important projects he wanted to get implemented in Jaffna for the area’s development but he had been obstructed by the TULF.

Since the Prime Minister did not allow him to speak about many things in the Parliament he had to write a letter of protest to the Prime Minister, he complained.

Mr. Maheswaran said although to some points the Prime Minister expressed himself in his letter he could not be satisfied with some of those replies. He said he even had a discussion with the Prime Minister on August 28 over these developments.

Maheswaran also appreciated the Prime Minister, who was in dire need of the TULF team in the parliament at these crucial times. Although the TULF troubled him, now he had decided to go silent he charged.

The TULF using their undue influence had got his supporters transferred out using the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Mr. Maheswaran , charged              (EOM)
