IT IS UNACCEPTABLE TO ALLOW A TERRORIST GROUP WHICH KILLED LEADERS OF THE COUNTRY TO OBTAIN PARLIAMENTARY MAJORITY TO CHANGE THE COUNTRY’S CONSTITUTION SAYS OPPOSITION WHIP
By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles

It was unacceptable by the people for a terrorist leader of an organization that killed an elected President and two opposition leaders of the country and a Prime Minister of the neighboring country to do undue influence on parliamentarians to change the constitution of the country and attempt to obtain a two thirds parliamentary majority for Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for that purpose said chief opposition whip Mangala Samaraweera.

The People’s Alliance spokesman was replying to the Chief negotiator of the terrorist group, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Anton Balasingham who recently requested the members of parliament to give a two third majority for Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to pass constitutional amendments.

The main benefactor of a two third power for a constitutional amendment would be the LTTE and it is necessary to take forward the government’s plan to hand over the Northern and Eastern provinces to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam for a four year rule of a putative Interim Administration. If the LTTE and the government were unable to obtain such power the LTTE’s main dream would be stalled, analysts have pointed out.

Mangala Samaraweera said so far the LTTE had assassinated President Ranasinghe Premadasa and Opposition Leaders Appapillai Amirthalingam and Gamini Dissanayaka. He also reminded the President of the country Chandrika Kumaratunga was robbed of her eye by the terrorist group in an unsuccessful attempt on her life. Not only the Sri Lankan leaders the terrorists killed the Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi.

How dare such atrocious terrorist group was now asking the parliamentarians to give a two thirds majority to be handed over to their favorite Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, Samaraweera questioned.

Speaking of the proposed Interim Administration, LTTE’s Chief negotiator Anton Balasingham told a press conference at the conclusions of the first session of the direct talks between the UNF government and the LTTE in Thailand, “The LTTE must be given a role, a pivotal role to play and that we have been fighting in the last 20 years and we were involved in a violent crucial war and you must give a place and opportunity for our fighters, our cadre to run the administration in our own homeland .What is wrong in that?”

Samaraweera alleged UNP goons were attacking anti-government demonstrations and such an attack had taken place in Medirigiriya. He alleged that the police had not arrested the main suspects and allowed them escape the area to avoid the police. (EOM)
