Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) organized rioters pelted stones at the Vavuniya Police station and passing vehicles during a demonstration the terrorist group organized to demand the release of the LTTE cadres languishing in Sri Lankan jails. Reports from Vavuniya said that the demonstration turned violent when the slogan-shouting demonstrators were passing the Vavuniya police station. Several passing vehicles were seen severely damaged. The police , which has been instructed to act with utmost restraint by the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration in dealing with the LTTE, with whom the government is conducting an uneasy peace did not react even by charging with tear gas when the police station was attacked by a rain of stones. Stalling traffic in the area the violent demonstrators set up fires across the A9 Highway and the police was seen dousing the flames. The demonstrators later assembled in front of the Government Agent’s office and speaker after speaker demanded that the long drawn out investigations against LTTE suspects which made them languish in the Sri Lankan jails be ended soon and they be released. Senior Superintendent of Police Wilfred Mahanayaka said the police reaction was only restricted to explain to violators of law the wrongs they were doing and advising them to restrain themselves. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam has earlier used school children to attack a Sri Lanka army installation in Point Pedro mainly using schoolchildren of the Hartley College, Point Pedro. Later, they kidnapped the Principal of Hartley College, Sri Pathi assaulted him severely and left him in a cemetery injured as a warning to non-collaborators. During the kidnapping the army kept away from getting involved. In a second such violent attack the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam attacked the Valaichchenai Police station and destroyed the cafeteria and bunkers of the Police Station using school children mobs.
