EPDP CHARGES THE LTTE USING THE CEASEFIRE LENIENCY OF THE GOVERNMENT AND SMM IS TRYING TO ELIMINATE OPPOSING PARTIES
By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles

The Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP), a parliamentary political party of the Sri Lankan Tamils alleged that the terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam emboldened by their recent adventures of mob attacks against the police and the army has started building a fascist rule in the provinces of the North and East by destroying pluralism and democracy in the area by trying to eliminate political groups opposed to them physically.

Alleging that the terrorist group was now attempting to achieve its objectives through a ceasefire agreement that it failed to achieve through war the EPDP, that was powerful in the Northern islands of Jaffna peninsula even during the heyday of the LTTE said LTTE cadres in civilian attire attacked the EPDP office in Delft Island, physically injured some EPDP members and abducted one injured member while one Kannan of the LTTE Delft camp prevented the Sri Lanka Police in intervening.

An EPDP statement said, “On Saturday 5th October 2002, in the night, the LTTE in civilian attire attacked the EPDP office in Delft island. The attack was carried out in the same fashion as the recent attacks on army checkpoints in Point Pedro and Police barriers in Valachchenai.  The LTTE cadres slashed some members of the EPDP.  One EPDP member who was injured has been abducted by the LTTE.  Kannan of the LTTE’s Delft camp prevented the Sri lanka Police officers in intervening in the incident.”

The EPDP said the abduction occurred following some drunken supporters of the LTTE appearing in front of the EPDP office and abusing in Tamil obscene language.

When the EPDP members were trying to leave the office they were attacked with knives. According to the statement, one EPDP member who was attacked and injured rushed to the nearby building where a new police post was being set up to complain. But LTTE’s Kannan, who followed the injured member Ameen there  obstructed the Police intervention and abducted Ameen in front of the Police officers who were outnumbered at that time by a larger group of LTTE cadres.

The statement of the EPDP said that the people of delft were indignant that the peace which existed in the Delft Island for more than a decade had been disturbed by permitting the LTTE to enter the island under the guise of a Peace agreement.

The statement further said, “The people of this country could not have forgotten the recent attacks on Karavetty Pradesheeya Sabha Office , the attacks on Point Pedro and Valachchenai, the assault on school principal Sripathy  and the abduction of security service personnel in Trincomalee. The inability of the government and the SLMM to react to these incidents of attacks and its inability to retrieve six abducted soldiers from the LTTE has emboldened the LTTE to undertake the attack on the EPDP office.” (EOM)
