FIVE  LTTE RIOTERS KILLED AND 17 INJURED IN RETURN FIRE WHEN THEY ENTERED AN EASTERN PROVINCE STF CAMP AND OPENED FIRE
By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles

The first five deaths from a clash between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Sri Lanka Security Forces after a cease fire agreement was signed between the two parties was recorded , October 9  in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.

A series of well orchestrated assaults by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam using mobs of either school children or LTTE cadres attired in civilian clothes climaxed October 9 when a mob entered the Kanchana Pura Special Task Force camp  pelting stones and opening fire resulting in  three LTTE cadres getting fatally wounded in the return fire, STF sources said.

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission which oversees the ceasefire between the Tamil rebels and the Sri Lanka government said at least four died inside the STF camp.

When the LTTE mob entered the camp ground and started setting fire to the guard houses and trying to demolish a Buddha statue , tear gas was used to disperse the crowd but when they opened fire in retaliation the troops had to take cover in the bunkers and return fire the deputy chief of the STF Nimal Gunatilake said.

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission said four  died within the STF camp. The number injured and admitted to the  Thrukkovil hospital are 17.

STF sources said the trouble started when the Special Task Force tried to examine a tractor transporting some tyres by Vishvanadan and Christie Raj of the political wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The local LTTE alleged that those people were assaulted by the Special Task Force but the STF denied they ever assaulted anybody. The Judicial Medical Officer who examined the alleged victims has said that they did not have any injuries at all.

After the disputed assault, a LTTE led mob surrounded the Ampara District STF camp and started pelting stones at the camp. But when the rioters entered the camp and started setting fire to the guard houses and attempted to destroy a Buddha statue the STF said they used tear gas to disperse the crowd. But when the LTTE cadres started moving forward opening fire the STF troops getting cover in the bunkers had to return fire killing three rioters.

Nimal Gunatilaka said the STF troops were injured in the pelting of stones but said immediately they took cover in the bunkers to assault them back in fire power

The kanchana pura attack on the STF camp is the fourth of the mob attacks the LTTE launched on police stations and security installation during the last few weeks.

LTTE organized mob attack using school children was aimed at the army check point at Point Pedro in the Northern Province. For this the LTTE used the students of Hartley College. Later the LTTE cadres kidnapped the Principal of the school, Mr. Sri Pathy , assaulted him severely and left him in a cemetery injured as a warning against non-corporation. Thereafter a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam organized school children mob entered the Valaichchenai police station and  destroyed their cafeteria, bunkers and fences. In the third attack just one day before the attack on STF camp a

LTTE organized mob pelted stones at the Vavuniya police station. The Kanchanapura attack is the fourth in the series. (EOM)
