JANATHA VIMUKTHI PERAMUNA ACCUSES GOVERNMENT FOR LACK OF SECURITY FOR THE SINHALESE AND MUSLIMS IN THE EASTERN PROVINCE
By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles

Wimal Weerawansa, the Information Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and member of parliament charged that the due to the violent acts created by LTTE cadres released by the government from jails the government had created a situation where the Sinhalese and the Muslims in the Eastern Province had to provide their own security.

The JVP official said this government has miserably failed to bring the LTTE under control and impose its authority.

Weerawansa who is also the Parliamentary Group leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna said at a press briefing that the leadership of the People’s Alliance in the parliament was not doing anything against the situation and the all those anti-UNP voters who voted for the People’s Alliance should bring tremendous pressure at all provincial level on the PA leadership to do something to arrest the situation.

Weerawansa accused the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, who are supposed be in a ‘peace process’ with the UNF government for creating a violent atmosphere threatening the Sinhalese and the Muslims in the Eastern Province. He said due to this the Sinhalese and the Muslims in the Eastern Province lack any government security at the moment.

Weerawansa accused the government of Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe of failing to impose the authority of the government in this area.

He said the JVP was against giving over any part of Sri Lanka to any ethnic unit and said if this was allowed there wouldn’t be any limit to handing over varied part of the small island nation like dividing them as “Malaya Nadu” and even parts to various religious sectors etc. This would ultimately turn the whole country to a butcher’s shop he accused.

He said the Leader of Opposition or the Chief Opposition whip had miserably failed to control the Members of Parliament of the People’s Aliance and had failed miserably in their task. Those anti-UNP masses who voted for them should bring tremendous pressure on these leaders to do something , he demanded.

The JVP parliamentary leader said the Tiger had brought the UNF government under its paw and that’s how the Attorney General’s Department was pressed to release two armed LTTE fellows on bail.

Weerawansa said that the government through their own follies were realizing that an agreements with the LTTE were not adequate. He said that’s why some cabinet ministers were offering an olive branch to president Chandrika Kumaratunga, whom they miserably were attempting to undermine in collaboration of the LTTE .

Weerawansa said the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna was planning to hold in five major towns discussions with groups as to how to meet the challenge of the government to divide this country with the LTTE. He said the JVP would also lay plans to defeat the government’s and LTTE’s plans to gain international recognition for the terrorist group.

He said the separatist tendencies of the government and the LTTE should be defeated in order for all ethnic communities of the nation to live with dignity.

Wimal Weerawansa said he Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna also took leadership in consolidate opposition of all parties against the UNP move to sell assets of the people to the foreigners. (EOM)
