Supporting directly Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s minority government in Colombo in its present crisis the main organ of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in its latest edition said “Sri Lanka’s future depends on a stable UNF government.” The Tamil Guardian, the main organ of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in its October 23 edition said Ranil Wickremesinghe’s United National Front government suffered a major setback because of the Supreme Court ruling on the 19th amendment to the constitution but Sri Lanka’s future depended on a stable UNF government. The leader editorial of the paper said , “Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is left now with two choices- seeking a fresh mandate from the people or accepting his government’s perpetual vulnerability to ( President ) Kumaratunga’s unpredictable whim.” Absolutely rejecting and advising against the numerous calls for cohabitation between the President and the United National Front (UNF) government the London based LTTE organ said such “siren calls” for cohabitation were “coming mainly from those who seek to unite the Sinhala polity behind a Sinhala nationalist standard.” While praising Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe the LTTE journal attacked the President by expressing, “Kumaratunga is inimically opposed to genuine negotiations with the LTTE.” The LTTE organ said while the UNF government was becoming increasingly vulnerable it was an “absolute certainty a resurgent PA will seek to undermine any agreement struck with the LTTE” by the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration. The LTTE organ said apart from its patent inability now to protect against the moves of President Kumaratunga the government was also facing a debilitating mutiny by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress. The editorial said the LTTE’s continued and active engagement in the Norwegian initiative “is an implicit expression of confidence” in the administration of Ranil Wickremesinghe.
