SRI LANKA GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVE PARTICIPATES IN THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE EAST’S FIRST EELAM POLICE STATION
By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles

Sri Lanka’s Chief negotiator with the LTTE at the Thailand talks and Constitutional Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris played down the rebel group’s extension of its Eelam Police to the Eastern Province and said it was a process happening in the LTTE controlled areas for a long time while the opening ceremony of the first such station at Palugamam was done with the participation of the Sri Lanka government representative, the additional Government Agent of Batticaloa, V. Shanmugam.

The Minister was replying to a question raised at a press conference after he appreciated the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam for its flexibility in cooperation with the government in restoring peace in Sri Lanka. The Question was then asked: How come the LTTE was extending its Police force now to the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka?

Replying to that the Minister said it was only happening in the LTTE controlled areas and it was nothing new and has been happening for a long time now.

The first Eelam Police in the Eastern Province at Palugamam was declared open, November 6, with the Sri Lanka government representative, the Batticaloa Additional Government Agent V. Shanmugam participating in the ceremony, reported the official news website of the LTTE, the Tamil Net.

In fact, playing a major role in the opening ceremony where the separatist Tiger Flag was symbolically raised and no Sri Lankan Lion flags were flying Batticaloa’ S additional government agent of the Sri Lanka government, V. Shanmugam unveiled the name board of the Eelam Police station, the Tamil Net reported.

The new Palugamam Police station is in the Vellavely Divisional Secretariat administrative area. At this ceremony the terrorist group’s Special Military Commander, Ramesh raised the Tamil Eelam flag of the putative separatist state, the leaping ferocious tiger.

Eastern Province’s second Eelam Police station and the first in the strategic port district of Trincomalee was declared open two days later November 8, at Sampur, a village in Muttur East. Muttur was an area where many Muslims were harmed by the LTTE during the recent Muslim-LTTE ethnic riots.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the Sampur Eelam Police the Trincomalee District LTTE political head, Tilak said,”Our police service is one of the three main components of the administrative framework of the LTTE. The other two are Tamil Eelam judiciary and Banking service?. We intend to open more police stations in future.”  (EOM)
