Sri Lanka’s Chief negotiator with the LTTE at the Thailand talks and Constitutional Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris played down the rebel group’s extension of its Eelam Police to the Eastern Province and said it was a process happening in the LTTE controlled areas for a long time while the opening ceremony of the first such station at Palugamam was done with the participation of the Sri Lanka government representative, the additional Government Agent of Batticaloa, V. Shanmugam. The Minister was replying to a question raised at a press conference after he appreciated the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam for its flexibility in cooperation with the government in restoring peace in Sri Lanka. The Question was then asked: How come the LTTE was extending its Police force now to the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka? Replying to that the Minister said it was only happening in the LTTE controlled areas and it was nothing new and has been happening for a long time now. The first Eelam Police in the Eastern Province at Palugamam was declared open, November 6, with the Sri Lanka government representative, the Batticaloa Additional Government Agent V. Shanmugam participating in the ceremony, reported the official news website of the LTTE, the Tamil Net. Addressing the opening ceremony of the Sampur Eelam Police the Trincomalee District LTTE political head, Tilak said,”Our police service is one of the three main components of the administrative framework of the LTTE.
