LTTE STARTS KILLING ABDUCTED POLITICAL RIVALS AFTER TORTURE; DISARMED TAMIL MILITANTS ARE AT GREAT RISK OF BEING KILLED

By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles
An alleged abduction victim of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Poopal Pillai Alagathurai who has been missing since December 16 was found dead with severe torture marks on his body in the Mandoor lagoon, Vellavely Police in the Eastern Province said.

Poopal Pillai Alagathurai (35) who belonged to a rival Tamil political party of the LTTE terrorist group, EPRLF (Vardaraja Perumal Sect) held the post of the vice chairman in the local government body of Poratheevu Pattu Pradeshiya Sabha and was allegedly abducted by the terrorists of the Tamil Tigers six days before his body was found December 21.

Showing severe torture by his captors the body of Alagathurai was minus his arm, and severe cut injuries were found on the neck, the Police said.

R. Thurairatnam, Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha said that this crime has been committed by the LTTE. But the political wing of the LTTE denied the accusations and said they were accusations of men with wicked minds. It is customary for the terrorist group to routinely deny all charges against them.

Poopal Pillai Alagathurai, who got married recently, was visiting his sister in his native village of Mandoor. After dinner he fetched some curries prepared for his visit and returning to his wife’s home when Tamil Tigers were suspected to have abducted him.

The EPRLF (Vardaraja Perumal Sect.), PLOT and EPDP of the Eastern city of Batticaloa have complained to the National Human Rights Commission, the Norway backed Sri lanka Monitoring Mission, President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe that seven members of their political groups have been abducted by the LTTE ever since the LTTE signed an agreement with the United National Front government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The complaint said five out of the seven were abducted by the LTTE during the last months and all of them were languishing in Tiger prisons in sub human conditions. The rival political parties of the LTTE appealed the authorities to get them released from the Tiger prisons.

On December 3, EPDP Batticaloa organizer Viji Thangaraja , former North East Council member Nesiah Nesarajah, and translator Gnanajothi of Badulla were also allegedly abducted by the LTTE. Nesiah Nesarajah is a member of the EPDP.

Under the conditions of the ceasefire agreement signed between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe all Tamil political groups except the LTTE had to be disarmed.

Under those circumstances the LTTE has taken every possible measures to drive away all Tamil political parties from Tamil areas both in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

The LTTE is openly advocating a one party polity for the Tamil areas of Sri lanka contrary to the provisions of fundamental rights granted to its citizens by the Constitution of Sri Lanka. (EOM).
