September 05.07.25 AM:A Sri Lanka Muslim Congress delegation met Interior Minister John Amaratunga and UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrama to complain about thuggery directed at them by UNP parliamentarians and UNP organizers , a spokesman of the Muslim party said.
The meeting held at the official residence of the Prime Minister, the Temple Trees was arranged after Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem complained that it had become almost impossible to stay in a coalition with the United National Party following certain brutish violent activities directed against the Muslim party especially in the Puttalam area by UNP thugs.
K.E.Bhai , aspokesman of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress said that UNP’s Aswar of the Puttalama District and the Chairman of the DDC was abusing government power to harass the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress in Puttalama.
They had created a situation where the SLMC could no longer tolerate the harassment and stay as a coalition partner with the UNP he charged.
Meanwhile political critics said it was ironical that Minister John Amaratunga who heads the Police on one hand and some notorious thugs on the other was put forward to find solutions to a serious problem of thuggery by the government.
K.E. Bhai also said the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress also heard the news that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam had warned Muslims and Tamils against joining the Police in its latest recruitments to enlist 550 new policemen for enhanced protection for the Muslims in the Eastern Province.
He said the party’s next politburo meeting would take up the matter for discussions.
He said the LTTE had no right to tell anybody not to join the Police.
