EASTERN LTTE AREA LEADER THOOYAVAN INFORMS THAT HE WOULD DEFY THE TRINCOMALEE MAGISTRATE AND NOT APPEAR IN COURTS

By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles

February 09,11:36 PM: An LTTE area leader Thooyavan has informed the Kuchchaveli Police, through a messenger that he did not intend attending the Trincomalee Magistrate court, as ordered by the magistrate on a case filed by the Kuchchaveli Police.

The Kuchchaveli political leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, on the notice delivered to him at the political office wrote that he did not intend attending the courts on February 10 as ordered by the magistrate and returned the notice to the police through a messenger, police sources said.

Trincomalee magistrate S. Thiyagendran, issued notice on the rebel political leader, Thooyavan to appear before his courts when Thooyavan and his colleagues were attempting to erect a LTTE war memorial in a strip of land owned by the Road Development Authority (RDA) in Kuchchaveli, in a Sri Lanka Government controlled area in the Eastern province.

The navy, which was guarding the area, made a complaint to the Kuchchaveli police and said Thooyavan and his colleagues were building an illegal war memorial on a land owned by a government agency. The Navy also said the LTTE was attempting to do an illegal act not allowed by the ceasefire agreement. The police filed action seeking the intervention of the courts to stop the erection of the war memorial claiming it might lead to a breach of peace. The LTTE war memorial was attempted to be built at the Gopalapuram junction in the Nilaweli area.

The Sri Lanka navy stationed 15 men to prevent the builders from reaching the war memorial site. After the receipt of the notice from Thooyavan the navy guards had been reinforced by more police personnel, police sources said.

The LTTE was attempting to erect the war memorial to commemorate 22 of their fighters who died in a sea mishap after returning from a successful massacre of rival camp of fellow Tamils of the Eelam National Democratic Front, in one of the many fratricidal wars the Tamil Tigers fought few years ago.

Jon Ledang, the Chief of the Trincomalee branch of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission met LTTE ‘s district area leader Thilak and Thooyavan in an attempt to diffuse tension in the area.
