SLMM DECIDES THAT LTTE WOMEN’S UNIT SHOULD NOT WEAR BELTS WHILE ENTERING SRI LANKA GOVERNMNT HELD AREAS

By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles

February 11,07:46 PM:The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) has decided in favor of the Sri Lankan security forces in the dispute which arose regarding the waist belts worn by the Women’s units of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The security forces from the beginning insisted the women’s unit‘s of the LTTE should not wear military belts when traveling through the Sri lanka government controlled areas.

They insisted , under the cease fire agreement the LTTE could not wear any military gear at all while crossing Sri Lanka government held areas

Recently , Kayal Walee, a LTTE military woman complained to the Sri lanka Monitoring Mission that the security personnel turned them away at Sri lanka government check points for wearing their waist belts. She said such incidents occurred at Welanai and Manipay. She said once a troop of them were asked to return to Wanni without proceeding beyond Muhamalai for the same reason.

At a meeting recently held between Olive Random of the SLMM and the LTTE representatives it was announced that the army personnel were carrying out orders given by the commanding officers in Colombo and the SLMM accepted the position of the government. They advised the women’s units should stop wearing any belt when crossing or entering Sri Lanka government held areas.
